The Urgency for Mindfulness

In today's fast-paced landscape, the demands placed on us are increasing exponentially and affecting our mental faculties. This is compounded by our dependence on digital devices which is causing addictive patterns in our brains. Our attention spans are negatively impacted, along with overall performance, creativity, innovation and so on.

I like to use the analogy that our brains these days are like web browsers with multiple tabs open concurrently, which not only diminishes the efficiency of the system but can cause the browser to completely crash.

As a result, it's no surprise that most people feel overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed out and sometimes on the verge of burnout. Not to mention the physical ailments or mental health issues that can be by-products of excessive stress. The way we are living is not only unhealthy but unsustainable.

Mindfulness is a powerful practice that helps individuals be more present in the moment. The exercises that build our ability to be more mindful heighten our self-awareness so that we are empowered to see ourselves and our environment more clearly in order to respond accordingly. It also cultivates resilience so that we can have access to more clarity, focus and intentionality.

In brief, it creates a mind that is better able to cope with the demands of everyday life and that can face what is, rather than focusing on what could be or looking back at what was.

Personally speaking, as a mindfulness practitioner for over a decade, this practice is my anchor.
